The Sword and the Scribe: Emma Buckingham

From birds chirping, to metal clanging against metal and the sound of keys on a laptop, Emma Buckingham’s life is full of the sounds of niche interests. Emma has been pursuing these interests since the early moments of her childhood.

She first started birding with her father around the age of five, down inHouston, Texas. Her father gifted Emma a book of birds, and that is where she found her interest growing.

“I was interested in the bright colors,” Buckingham said.

Her father was also a fencer and Buckingham adopted this second interest during her high school years. She then continued throughout college, lucky enough to find teams at both schools she attended, and is now a coach for the Mizzou Fencing Club.

Emma is also a professor of Classical Archaeology at MU, currently working on a paper about similarities and differences between groups inAncient Southern Italy. Buckingham will present this paper in the next month during a conference she will be attending.
