Art Photography

I've been lucky enough while in school to focus on and hone my artistic photography skills. I have spent so many hours waiting outside with my camera to capture the perfect moment to express myself through still images.
Between Tongues
Between Tongues is a photo essay that explores the experience of a language barrier. Through parts of the body, being fluent in the most widely spoken language globally and personal experiences with language barriers, I depict the feeling of hardships with communication.
This is a three photo series focused on literal parts of the body through posed images. Photo one is an image of an ear - where we hear people’s words. Photo two is a piece of paper with a pen. This object is open to recording, interpretation, translation and understanding – physical medium for language. Photo three is an image of a mouth speaking. I created this image of myself saying Hi, I’m Emma Rae and I speak English. These photos are all taken in low lighting, illuminated by a single light source in an isolated space. The lighting is an interpretation of the feeling of ‘being in the dark’ when a language barrier is experienced. Between Tongues is a completely visual presentation, unencumbered by speech and language.
